Love triangle ends in brutal assault at the Bamboo

PHOTO BY PETER SUTTERS JR. Bamboo Supper Club What started as a quarrel between two women Saturday night over a man, ended up with one of the women being attacked with a pint glass and a high-heeled shoe - resulting in an eye-to-mouth gash, and a husband and a wife under arrest.

According to a Nantucket Police report, the victim of the attack and 36-year-old Laurie Ray had been getting into arguments over the past couple of days because the two women were involved with the same man.

and then beating her with a high-heeled shoe, while the victim lay unconscious on the floor, bleeding heavily from the face, the report said.

When Ray's husband Mark, who was not the man in the middle of the love triangle, discovered the reason for Laurie Ray attacking the woman, he hit her with a closed fist in the face three times before being restrained by patrons of the bar, according to the report and those familiar with the incident.

Laurie Ray was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and mayhem and Mark Ray was charged with domestic assault and battery.

Both were arraigned on Monday in Nantucket District Court and had their cases continued to a later date for pretrial hearings.

A photo of the victim in the case folder of Laurie Ray showed a huge gash on the left side of her face.

According to the police report compiled after an interview with the victim, the incident began to unravel last Thursday when the victim attempted to talk to Laurie Ray about "some negative words that she had said about (the victim)." On Friday, the victim said Ray came to her place of employment and was "yelling at her in front of customers, which led to Laurie pushing (the victim) into a coffee machine before finally being asked to leave."

According to the police report, the victim headed to the Bamboo Supper Club on Saturday after getting off work around 11:30 p.m. and sometime later, she and a friend headed to the upstairs bathroom.

When the victim exited the bathroom, the assault took place, according to the police report.

Ray first pushed the victim, and then struck her with a pint glass causing the laceration. When the victim fell to the ground, Ray took off one of her high-heeled shoes and began to hit her with it as well as pull her hair and punch her, according to the report.

The victim was transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital and later flown off island for additional treatment. Her current condition is unknown. I
