8 p.m. Constance Laibe Hays Memorial Lecture: Samantha Power Samantha Power is the Anna Lindh Professor of Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy, based at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University. She is the author of "Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World" (Penguin Press, 2008), a biography of the UN envoy killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2003. Her book 'A Problem from Hell': America and the Age of Genocide (New Republic Books) was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, National Book Critics Circle Award and the Council on Foreign Relations' Arthur Ross Prize in 2003. She remains a working journalist, reporting from all over the world. She is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School and spent 2005 to 2006 working in the office of Senator Barack Obama. 4 p.m. Film: "Where The Rivers Flow North" Filmmaker Jay Craven presents the first in a trilogy of his films based on novels by Howard Frank Moser. In 1927, in Kingdom County, Vermont, a large dam is to be built; however, Noel Lord, a logger and cedar-oil harvester, won't give up his lifetime lease on land that will be flooded. Released in 1994, the film stars Rip Torn and Tantoo Cardinal with appearances by Michael J. Fox and Treat Williams. Craven's other two films,"Stranger in the Kingdom" and "Disappearances" will be shown on Aug. 10 and 11. He will teach a four day screenwriting seminar beginning Monday, August 11. First Congregational Church Tower Tour You really haven't seen Nantucket until you have seen it from the Tower of the Old North Church, conveniently located at 62 Centre Street. The enclosed 94-step climb has several stopping points for resting and a museum level with historic photographic displays. A visit to the Tower should only take a half hour, but you are welcome to stay as long as you are enjoying the view. Taking pictures welcomed. Nantucket Presidential Papers American presidents have been concerned in the affairs of Nantucket Island from the days of the nation's founding. The collections of the Nantucket Historical Association hold documents signed by almost every president beginning with George Washington. In recognition of election year, the NHA presents an exhibition highlighting some of the more remarkable items in the collection.
