Kahn nearly blind keeps artistic vision
      L andscape artist Wolf Kahn is still painting. Kahn is one of the last living members of the "Hoffman Mafia," which included artists Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Red Grooms and others who had studied under the German abstract expressionist Hans Hoffman, who had arts schools in New York and in Provincetown, Mass.

Maria Mitchell turns 190, Vestal Street Observatory turns 100
      A ugust 1 marks the birthday of Maria Mitchell, who was born at home on Vestal Street in 1818. To celebrate her life and legacy, the Maria Mitchell Association invites the public to a full afternoon of free activities and refreshments. The museums on Vestal Street are free to the public all day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Summer Palooza
      Summer Palooza is an evening of live music featuring two of Nantucket's finest local acts, The Shingles and 4 EZ Payments, on Tuesday, August 5, 9 p.m.. at the Nantucket New School, 15 Nobadeer Farm Road. 4 EZ Payments features a mix of Old Time and Bluegrass music and is well known for its original arrangements of popular songs performed in a Bluegrass style.

      Noonday Concert tomorrow Jazz pianist Matthew Hutchinson will be featured in tomorrow's Noonday Concert at the Unitarian Church from noon to 12:30 p.m. A suggested donation of $5 at the door will be welcomed. Hutchinson, a Cleveland, Ohio native, studied music and improvisation at Bennington College and the New School in New York City.

      "Italian Villas and Their Gardens" by Edith Wharton Not only are Edith Wharton's books classics, but the lady herself is an icon. In her honor, Rizzoli has published a hardcover facsimile of the original first edition of "Italian Villas and Their Gardens" that was published in 1904, containing copies of the original plates, including all 26 Maxfield Parrish paintings.

      Barbara White will discuss educational pioneer Cyrus Peirce on Wednesday, August 6 at 7 p.m. at the Nantucket Whaling Museum. White is recently retired from the Nantucket school system, where she taught history in the middle school for twenty-five years.

Opera singer Tamara Mumford in concert August 5
      Tamara Mumford's lilting voice will fill the First Congregational Church next Tuesday evening when the acclaimed mezzo-soprano performs in the fifth summer concert presented by the Nantucket Musical Arts Society. Mumford's Carnegie Hall debut was in 2005 and her Metropolitan Opera debut was in 2006 when she performed Laura in "Luisa Miller.

Samantha Hunt and "The Invention of Everything Else"
      Samantha Hunt will speak about her new novel "The Invention of Everything Else" at the Atheneum on Monday, August 4, at 8 p.m. Hunt, 37, is the youngest of six children and two of her sisters, songwriter Amy England and Elizabeth O'Brien live on island. England will perform a musical introduction to Hunt's talk at the Atheneum.
