FIRST AT LAST HATCH & BURNS BLAZES PATH TO GLORY IN IRON TEAM RELAY
      For team Hatch and Burn, the sweet taste of victory was a long time coming in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nantucket Iron Team Relay Race. For the last four years, they had finished second to the team A Taste of Nantucket.

NSSA Soccer
May 31 -June 1
      Nantucket Student Soccer Association's (NSSA) U13 Boys Team assured a playoff berth without stepping on the pitch this past weekend. Bourne forfeited after refusing to come to Nantucket Saturday, continuing a sad habit of teams not honoring commitments to the league, and depriving Nantucket of playing a full schedule.

     Left-fielder Morgan Dugan scores a critical run against Nauset in early-round tournament play last Friday. The Whalers were down 9-1 in the second inning but came back in their last-ups to win over the Warriors, 10-9. This win led to another win at home Sunday over the Diman Bengals, 9-7. Post-season wins and a strong regular season (17-5 overall) propelled the Whalers to the semi-finals against Bristol-Plymouth, scheduled for yesterday afternoon, too late for this edition. Fifteen-year veteran softball coach Chris Maury will be leaving the team at the end of the season, as he has been named Athletic Director for the High School, replacing Nancy Larrabee who announced her retirement earlier this year.

HEARD BUT NOT SEEN!
      Ifirst remember this bird from reading "A Guide to Bird Watching" by Joseph J. Hickey, one of my early bird bibles. It was described as a haunting sound of the eastern woodlands. Its ringing whistled "Teacher - Teacher - Teacher" call would fill the air.

The 15th seed nantucket Whalers lost, 10-1, against 18-seeded Marian. Welch stole second base on the next pitch. Marian Senior right-hander Chris McKenzie pitched six innings of solid work as he struck out 10 and allowed just one unearned run.
