Whalers romp in first round before slipping to Avon
      As the Whalers and their coaching staff will tell you, and as the games attest, the pace of the postseason is fast, furious and not for the faint of heart. The best basketball of the year is on display - a true treat for fans, but a test for teams hoping to advance.

Lady Whalers dispatch Provincetown, Hull
      If there was anyone still out there who couldn't quite grasp the merits of high school athletics, it is hoped that person was in the vicinity of the Nantucket High School gym last Friday. A passerby within earshot most certainly would have sensed the excitement emanating from the basketball hardwood.

Paterson hits 1,000
      Angela Paterson made a fast break layup last Wednesday afternoon that earned her a place in the high school history books. The basket against Provincetown in the first round of the state tournament represented the junior's 1,000th point.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

We've got Sharon up front, playing the part of loving matriarch who isn't afraid to smack a few knuckles when the situation calls for it. BIRDS OF NANTUCKET
AN LGJ?
      Birders are continually flummoxed by "LBJ's" - Little Brown Jobs. These include a lot of the sparrows and the ubiquitous Yellowrumped Warbler, whose winter plumage is so nondescript. But this week's bird doesn't hide in the grass or bushes around our island. No, it inhabits our winter beaches. Finding one is a real prize during Nantucket's cold seasons.
