PLAYOFF BOUND!
NHS varsity teams earn first-round byes; Girls play at home today at 2, Boys play Thursday at 5:30
      With undefeated runs through the Lighthouse Conference, both the boys' and girls' varsity squads received first-round byes with second round home games starting today in the south sectionals of the state tournament.

Ellis, Garufiset NHS records at state meet
New best times posted in 200 free, 200 IM
      Ainsley Ellis and Beau Garufieach broke school records during last weekend's Division 2 All-State finals. Ellis, the only swimmer representing the Cape and islands during the girls' meet at Harvard on Sunday, finished fourth out of 31 swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle event, setting a new NHS standard with a time of 1:59.39.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
      My brother Arnold recently reported to me about a well-meaning soul named William Stoner, who lives down in San Marcos, Texas, just outside Austin. This gentleman would stop by the Quail Creek Golf Club every couple of years. He'd don his snorkeling gear and jump into the ponds on the course and retrieve wayward golf balls.

      FARRELL CONTINUES COLLEGIATE LACROSSE CAREER Ethan Farrell, a 2006 graduate of Nantucket High School, is playing lacrosse for a second year at Lynchburg College in Virginia. Farrell, a sophomore midfielder, scored two goals and had three assists last season. He was the victor of 88 face-offs and played in all 17 games with 13 starts.

      Birders have a rather desperate sense of humor. Some would even say we're humor-starved. So anything remotely resembling a joke gets a hearty response. The exchange in the title normally starts out when someone spots a bird and calls, "Mourning dove!" Then some resident wit responds, "Evening grosbeak!" and another "Night hawk!" or even, "Night heron!

Hockey team ends on high note
      The Whalers hockey team wound up its season with a victory on Feb. 20, shutting out Dennis-Yarmouth on the road, 2-0. Freshman Gary Caruso put the Whalers ahead to stay, scoring a goal in the second period, and James McIntosh added an empty net goal with seconds remaining in the game. Goaltender Joe Bopp returned to action with a strong performance in net.
