Hoop squads primed for state tournament
      The regular season ends today, and the only question now is whom the two Whaler squads will play in the first round of the state tournament. Both the boys and girls teams top the Lighthouse Conference with 6-0 league records and each should be awarded with at least one home game when state tournament pairings are announced Friday.

Hockey team plays tough in home finale
      Nantucket's hockey squad closed out its home schedule over the weekend with determined efforts against Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod Tech. The Whalers showed poise in both games as they came back valiantly in each. Against the Vineyard Friday night, Nantucket found itself in a 2-0 hole early, but hung tough in a 5-2 loss. Alex Perkins scored both Whalers goals.

Girls close home schedule with an impressive win
      Playing before an appreciative island crowd, the Lady Whalers hosted Dennis-Yarmouth in their last home game of the regular season last Thursday.

HENRY TOOLE
Sophomore, Swimming
      The boys' swim team has had another strong season. An essential piece to this success is sophomore Henry Toole. Swimming since fourth grade, he has excelled in the backstroke and sprint freestyle events. An overall active kid, he also plays golf, lacrosse and surfs.

Records fall at south sectional swim meet
      Ainsley Ellis broke two Nantucket High School records and Beau Garufibroke another during the south sectional swimming and diving championships held at MIT last weekend. Ellis broke the school record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.78 while placing second at MIT. Her time of 103.

      The loyal devotees of my column - both of them - will no doubt remember a couple of years ago when we had a brief discussion of the butterfly effect as it relates to what is known as chaos theory. In this theoretical concept, a butterfly in Equatorial Africa flaps its wings, thus causing a microscopic disturbance in the air around it.

      You've heard of a 'sawbuck,' but what about a 'sawbill?' A sawbuck is a ten-dollar bill. Perhaps a sawbill is money? But remember - this is a bird column. This must refer to a bird's bill with teeth. This makes me think of the saying that chickens don't have teeth. And that in turn ties into the saying that something is as scarce as hen's teeth.

Nantucket takes Island Invitational
      The boys romped over Mt. Everett, 82- 49, and the girls dispatched Harwich, 49-43, in Monday's finale of the two-day Island Invitational on Martha's Vineyard. Jordan Ferreira, who scored 25 points, and Delroy Lawrence, who had 12, were named tournament all-stars. The win improves the boys' record to 13-6.
