Records fall during BCC championships
      Three Nantucket High School records fell during Saturday's Bay Colony Conference swimming and diving championships, held on Nantucket for the first time since 1997. Beau Garufibroke the 200-yard freestyle record of 1.55.97 set by Luther Blount in 1999 with a new best time of 1.54.81. The junior also broke his own record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1.02.

Ferreiras are a basketball family
      Jordan Ferreira admits he was a little nervous before last Wednesday's scheduled game against Cape Cod Academy. The Nantucket High School senior was poised to score his thousandth point for the Whalers, and not only would his parents be at the game, but kids throughout the school had been making signs and talking about the pending achievement all day.

Island Waves compete in Virginia
      Nantucket's pre-juvenile synchronized skating team, the Island Waves, was one of 17 teams to take part in a synchronized skating competition in Richmond, Va. on Jan. 25 and 26. The Waves competed well in the qualifying round and made it through to the finals.

Dolphins have record-setting meet
The Dolphins traveled to Marshfield Sunday and broke six team records and two SEMSL records.

BIRDS OF NANTUCKET
BUTTER-NOSE
      This nickname takes me back to my childhood when my Mom would hold a buttercup up to my chin to see if it turned yellow. Of course the reflected light made it do that and she would proclaim, "See! You do like butter!" Although this week's bird is nicknamed 'butternose,' it never runs into butter. Its favorite foods are sea clams and scallops.

TAYLOR THAYER
Sophomore; Assistant Captain, Hockey
      After a rough beginning to the season the Whalers hockey team is looking to get a few wins under its belt before the season closes. Assistant Captain Taylor Thayer hopes to be part of this upward trend. He has played since sixth grade and is a force to be reckoned with on the ice. An avid athlete, he also enjoys golf, lacrosse and snowboarding.

Girls continue to roll
      The Lady Whalers clinched a postseason playoff berth and improved to 12-1 on the season with three wins in the past week. At home against Provincetown Monday, Angela Paterson had 23 points, Aileen Fredericks had nine and Lindsay Fry and Whitney Butler scored eight in the 68-20 win.

Gymnasts host Carver
      Whaler gymnasts held their only home meet of the season Monday and performed well against Carver, who took the meet, 128- 112. "I'm very proud of our team," coach Richelle D'Elia said. "We had an excellent meet." Senior captain Maxine Daniels (pictured) competed in vault, bars, beam and floor exercise and "had an outstanding meet," D'Elia said.
