Ferreira could reach 1,000 points today
      Whalers senior forward Jordan Ferreira needs just 19 points to reach the hallowed 1,000 point mark for his high school career. He could conceivably reach the milestone at home this afternoon when the Whalers host Cape Cod Academy. Game time is 3 p.m.

Boys and girls rebound in doubleheader
      There were a few things riding at the John J. O'Neill gym Saturday afternoon when both the boys' and girls' varsity teams hosted Sturgis Charter School. Each team was coming off losses to tough Dennis-Yarmouth, the boys looking to rebound after losing an overtime thriller at home last Tuesday.

Senior; Swimming and Lacrosse Captain
      The Whalers girls' swim team is off to a decent start. One of the main forces on the team and the most experienced swimmer is senior captain Ainsley Ellis. She has swum competitively since she was six years old and has excelled in the sport at every level. She plans to continue her swimming in college.

      MIDDLE SCHOOL LACROSSE SIGNUPS Signups for U15 boys' and girls' lacrosse will be next Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Cyrus Peirce School cafeteria. A $50 per player fee will be due that evening and parents must accompany children to signups. This program is for sixth, seventh and eighth graders. The season begins the third week in March.

      Most of you know of Jenny Wren, and if you are under the age of 40 you are probably thinking of the 2005 Paul McCartney song with that name. Paul is actually singing about the Dickens character from the book, "Our Mutual Friend." But there are other connections since I'm told the wren is Paul's favorite bird.

FANTASY ISLAND
      When I was a kid, Saturday nights were a big deal: "Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island" were on TV, back-to-back. It was the highlight of my week, this (to my mind) late-night network double-feature. To be totally honest, I can't for the life of me tell you why, exactly, I got so excited about these two shows.

Whaler hockey team gives Cape Tech a run
      Skating with an increased confidence, the Whalers' hockey team came out strong against Cape Tech/Chatham Friday night and forced the action to the visitors' end of the ice during a scoreless first period. Making his first start in goal, William Hitchcock turned away several shots on net.
