Charlie Hughes
      Charlie Hughes may not be a native, but he is as dedicated to Nantucket and as fond of life here as if he had been born and raised on the island. Brought up in North St. Paul, Minn., after high school Hughes joined the Seabees, the construction arm of the U.S. Navy, and stayed in service from 1957 to 1966.

FIRST BABY
      Proud parents Marc and Kimberly Cassano with their first daughter, Marina Ann, who is 2008's New Year's baby. Marina was born at Nantucket Cottage Hospital on Jan. 4 weighing 7 pounds and 13 ounces. She is the new sister of the Cassano's son Skyler.

      In Monday's District Court, Michele J. Bayard, 49, of Nantucket, charged May 7, 2002 with failing to attend jury duty, had the case continued to April 7. The charge will be dismissed on that day if she attends new jury duty assigned her for April 7.

Her grandparents are Sue and Paul Campbell and Steve and Holly Cassano, all of Manchester, Conn., Diane and Albert Hale of Hartwick Vt.

Commission supports tidal energy project
      Nantucket's Planning & Economic Development Commission voted unanimously last week to support Edgartown's proposed tidal generation project between Muskeget and Martha's Vineyard. At its Jan. 3 meeting, the NP&EDC endorsed the permit issued to Edgartown by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to install tidal generators in Muskeget Channel.
