"Leroy Grannis: Surf Photography of the 60s and 70s" by Steve Barilotti, Jim Heimann, and Leroy Grannis

Leroy Grannis captures the classic era of surfing in his most recent book of photos and text during a time before the commercialization of the sport, when "woodies" were the surf wagon of choice and men and women rode long redwood boards. Grannis documents the surfshops, the beach culture, the breaks, and the legends of surf in California and Hawaii in his intimate photographs. If you were there, know a surfer from this era, or are interested in the free-spirited history of surfing in a simpler time, this is the definitive book. It is a great gift for surf enthusiasts.

"Living Color" by Steve Jenkins

The same author-illustrator who brought us the fascinating "Actual Size" and the award-winning "What Do You Do with a Tail Like This?" has created a beautiful and informationpacked book about the presence and purposes of color in the animal world. Arranged in color sections, Jenkins' work explains the reasons and uses for animal color under eye-catching headings such as, "Red Says. . . step carefully," for the highly poisonous stonefish. Jenkins' mixed-media paint and cutpaper collage illustrations show brilliant color and amazing detail, while his concise paragraphs and animal charts at the end of the book leave young readers feeling informed and excited. Preview this and other wonderful children's books at the Weezie Library's program "Gift Books for the Holidays," Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Atheneum Great Hall. Books presented will be available for purchase, and refreshments will be served. For childcare during the program, call the CNC at 228-7257 ext. 1166.
