LIGHTHOUSE SCHOOL HOLDS YULETIDE FAIR IN NEW BUILDING

On Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Nantucket Lighthouse School ushers in the holiday season with its annual Yuletide Fair. The entire Nantucket community is invited to visit our brand new building for the fair which will feature handcrafted items, holiday gifts and tasty holiday treats, as well as great entertainment and activities for children.

The Lighthouse School has held a Yuletide Fair annually since its inception and with each passing year the event has grown. To keep pace with last year, this year's event will include an even wider variety of fine handcrafts.

In addition to the specialty grilled items and hot soups and drinks to enjoy at the Fair, this year's culinary offerings include beautifully wrapped baked goods suitable for giving as gifts.

Whereas "Yuletide" as it's become known, had its happy yet humble beginnings at Something Natural, the event was moved last year with great success to the even larger Westmoor Club. One of the hits there was enough space for an actual café where attendees could nosh and enjoy live entertainment by Mollie Glazer, Andy Bullington, Chris Westerland and Lighthouse kids. This year will be no different as the Lighthouse School will hold the event at its brand new building located at 1 Rugged Road. Fair-goers will have the chance to enjoy all the fun of Yuletide while also checking out the school's beautiful new home.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children as there will be a Kid Activity Area where kids can work on craft projects and make gifts of their own. Among activities planned are Christmas cookie and candle decorating, birdhouse painting, beading and face painting.

"We are pleased that more and more Nantucketers look forward to this warm and spirited holiday event each year," said Lizbet Carroll Fuller, Director of Education.

TRAINS, BOATS, PLANES AND AUTOMOBILES

Historian and NHA Research Fellow Bob Mooney will host "Trains, Boats, Planes, and Automobiles" at the Food for Thought Series on Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Discovery Room of the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad St., at noon. Free admission; bring your lunch.

These various modes of transportation have helped define Nantucket throughout its well-documented history. Boats were the original island taxis; however, the other modes all arrived after long debates and at their own prices. Mooney will discuss these colorful and sometimes contentious chapters of Nantucket's past.

This will be the last of the 2007 Food for Thought luncheons, but the series will resume on Jan. 10 with Ted Anderson, who will speak about the history of the Unitarian Church as it prepares to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2009.
