HOLIDAY SKATE Nantucket Ice will host a holiday skating exhibition and skate party this Sunday, Dec. 2, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Christopher Nugent Bovers Community Rink on Backus Lane. The exhibition will feature performances by the Island Waves, Learn to Skate students and students of the skating club, while the skate party will include Santa and friends. Admission is $10 for show and skating (skate rental included). For more information, call 228-2516.

RUNNING TO MEET CHALLENGE

Dr. Bob Kennedy, director of natural sciences for the Maria Mitchell Association, will run for the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge Team in next April's 112th running of the Boston Marathon on April 21. Dr. Kennedy hopes to raise $10,000 to benefit cancer research. To help him toward his goal, visit the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge Web site: www.RunDFMC.org.

Dr. Kennedy ran a Boston qualifying time of 3:50.32 and finished 2,488 out of 6,668 runners, at the Nov. 18 Philadelphia Marathon. Also qualifying for Boston that day were Elle Foley, with a time of 4:00.12, and summer resident Gretchen Cooney, with a time of 3:49.13.

TURKEY REGATTA TRADITIONAL CLOSE TO SAILING SEASON

Eleven teams participated in Nantucket Community Sailing's third annual Turkey Regatta, held last Saturday at Children's Beach. The post-Thanksgiving races traditionally close out the sailing season.

According to NCS executive director Nick Judson, participants ranged in age from 9 to 62. Winds were from the northwest at three-to-eight knots. Five races were sailed, with the 11 teams rotating into seven Hunter 140s.
