"The Arrival"
by Shaun Tan
At once personal and universal, Shaun Tan's stunning graphic novel recounts the age-old story of a stranger in a strange land, the saga of a man who leaves his family to build a new life for them in a new country. Using only ephemeral pencil drawings with imagery reminiscent of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" and Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away," the author/artist blends themes of belonging, identity, struggle and hope into a wordless narrative that shimmers with what he calls "intuitive resonance." The exquisite innocence of "The Arrival" begins with its cover, finely decorated to resemble an antique album. Inside, the magical city scenes, landscapes and portraits captivate - the longer you look, the more you see, the deeper the spell. No matter what your age, this extraordinary picture book will enchant you and draw you back again and again.

"Zugzwang: A Novel"
by Ronan Bennett
This very satisfying thriller is set in St. Petersburg in the spring of 1914, when the city is tense with the conflicting forces of numerous political factions. Some respite from the tension may be offered, thinks Dr. Otto Spethmann, the narrator, by the city's upcoming international chess tournament, in which the genius Avrom Rozental is the favorite. Then two murders, of a liberal editor and a possible revolutionary, take place. Spethmann, a psychoanalyst and a widower with an independent 18-year-old daughter, Catherine, a man living a withdrawn, unexciting life, is visited by the police, who have found his card on the murdered student Yastrebov. The complications grow when Spethmann takes on as patients Rozental, who is nearing a nervous breakdown, and the beautiful socialite Anna Petrovna, whose father, a powerful reactionary figure called The Mountain, may be able to sort out Spethmann's puzzling trouble with the law.

"No Talking"
by Andrew Clements
From the best-selling author of "Frindle" comes a fun read about a no talking contest between fifth grade boys and girls at Laketon Elementary School. Characters, both students and teachers, are truthfully portrayed and the plot easily grabs the reader, while deeper questions about communication, meaning and thought are deftly raised. An entertaining story for upper elementary students, this book would be a great discussion-starter, inside or outside the classroom.

"Ocean's Thirteen"
(Rated PG-13)
Danny (George Clooney), Rusty (Bred Pitt), and Linus (Matt Damon) are back with the rest of the gang in tow. This time things get personal. When Rueben (Elliot Gould) is kicked out of his dream casino, he slips off into a coma and the guys know they have to make everything right. Willie Bank (Al Pacino) is famous for ripping off his partners and being impossible to get to but that won't stop Ocean's 13. They have decided to completely rig the casino so every game in the house will spit money at the players. In order to finance this amazing feat, they have to go back to their old nemesis Benedict (Andy Garcia). Benedict agrees to finance the group as long as they will do one little favor for him: steal a bunch of unstealable diamonds. With so much going on there is also so much that could go wrong. This funny and clever threequel of the Ocean's 11 series is definitely one of the best.
