Field hockey team in playoff hunt
Nantucket kept its playoff hopes alive in two home games this week, fighting the Vineyard to a 2-2 tie last Wednesday afternoon and turning back Sturgis, 4-0, on Saturday. A loss to either team would have knocked the Lady Whalers out of the postseason, and they faced must win or tie games at Wareham Tuesday and in the regular season finale at Tyngsborough this Saturday.

MICHAEL GALVIN/The Independent Nicole Symer advances the ball during last Wednesday's home game against Martha's Vineyard. The Whalers draw with the Vineyarders, 2-2.
Scoring was confined to the first half in the hard-fought game against Martha's Vineyard. Scoring for Nantucket was Ashley Clinger, on an assist from Emily Pitts, and Grace Anne Tornovish, assisted by Cassie Moran. The Lady Whalers played aggressively in the second period, but could not push one through the goal.

Nantucket had a little more breathing room against visiting Sturgis. Pitts scored twice, while Moran and Halie Ciarmataro added the other goals.

Nantucket improved to 6-7-3, with a 4-1-3 record over its last eight games, a complete

turnaround from its 2-6 record during the season's first half. I
