Whalers JVs soldier on despite low numbers

Nantucket is known for old-time, hardnosed football, and the junior varsity is living up to that reputation with most players seeing action on both sides of the ball.

"We're playing with 14 kids," veteran Whalers junior varsity football coach Dennis Caron noted. "I don't think I've ever had that few in my 35 years of coaching."

Despite low numbers, the JV Whalers have been holding their own against much larger teams. Their two most recent contests against Bristol-Plymouth and South Shore Tech are cases in point. Although Nantucket fell to Bristol-Plymouth, 20-6, with Larry Bo Woolfolk scoring the only touchdown for the young Whalers, the team regrouped to narrow the margin against South Shore Tech last week, 22-18.

"For the few players that we have, we've played super," Caron said. "The kids just did a spectacular job. Our problem against South Shore Tech was we just couldn't stop them on defense."

Scoring against South Shore Tech was Zatrick Pinkney, who scored on a two-yard run in the first period. Tim Marsh scored in the second period on an 8-yard TD pass from Ryan Trainor. Woolfolk then ran the ball in from the 11 in the third stanza to complete Nantucket's scoring.

The team has played all its games to date off island, a trend that continued yesterday with a trip to Blue Hills. The JVs finally get a chance to play at home Oct. 30.

"Despite all these difficulties, the kids are performing,"
