Lady Whalers look for victory today against Vineyard
BY STEVE SHEPPARD INDEPENDENT SPORTS EDITOR
Awin this afternoon will bring them that much closer to the playoffs. The Whalers field hockey team has only one loss in its last six games, going 3-1-2 in that period to improve its record to 5-7-2.

"We have a little more work to do," head coach Lori Moran said after Sunday's hard fought 1-0 loss to Norwood at home. "It will be a big game against the Vineyard."

The Whalers seek to avenge an earlier 3-2 loss to the Vineyarders and fuel their post-season hopes, as only four games remain in the regular season, with just two of them at home: today's game against the purple and Saturday's contest against Sturgis Charter School.

Nantucket played well against Norwood, but just couldn't find the back of the net. Casey Kurash made a couple of nice saves for the Whalers in the first half and the defense bore down as both teams ended the stanza in a 0-0 tie.

Spurred by a Norwood goal early in the second period (one of only two shots Norwood had on goal in the period), the Lady Whalers went on the attack, consistently keeping the ball in the Norwood end. Grace Anne Tornovish got off two nice shots, the second hitting the side of the goal late in the game, but despite Nantucket's aggressive play, time ran out in this one.

"They played great today," Moran said. "We outplayed them and they won on an unlucky bounce."

The Whalers fared better earlier in the weekend, as Tornovish's first half goal at Cohasset Saturday helped Nantucket notch a tie. Kurash also had 11 saves on the day. On Friday, Nantucket traveled to Fall River and Durfee High School where a 1-0 victory

was assured by a Shelby Campbell goal. I
