EROSION IS HERE TO STAY To the editor: I concur with the statement that "Fishermen are more upset than ever with the latest beach nourishment info." Not only as a fisherman, but as a resident of Quidnet for more than 34 years. I join many, many Nantucketers, both native and seasonal, who are also "a little bit upset" by this proposal. It is not just the fishermen who are concerned. It would seem the bottom line question is "what is to be gained?" Who will benefit from this proposal? The answer is that this attempt to save the cliff and beach and several homes on Baxter Road. It will ultimately be all the residents of Nantucket and all fishermen who will bare the brunt of this decision. It is particularly disturbing that "money would buy off those who vocally oppose this proposition." Can so few as 20 people make that happen? I hope not. Erosion is here to stay. Sincerely yours, - Charles R. Rickards, M.D. |
