GRATEFUL FOR THEIR EFFORTS

To the editor:

I am one of many supporters of the Siasconset Beach Preservation Fund efforts who does not live near the 'Sconset bluff and has not got deep pockets. As a Nantucket resident, I am deeply appreciative of the efforts SBPF is making on behalf of all of us.

SBPF came into being in an emergency situation. Two terrible storms had taken out the 'Sconset beach, one road, and two rows of houses in Codfish Park. The waves were hitting the next road in, and the remaining houses seemed doomed. After much study and negotiation SBPF got the permits for its privately funded dewatering system in front of Codfish Park, and the 'Sconset beach returned. I am very grateful for the 200 plus foot beach we currently have there.

Now, another part of 'Sconset is endangered, and generous and thoughtful people are again trying to save it. Properties along upper Baxter Road have already experienced serious erosion, and the 'Sconset Bluff walk, enjoyed by Nantucketers and tourists alike, is significantly affected.

We need to assure a fair hearing and public support for the plans of generous Nantucketers who are working hard to stave off another catastrophe for 'Sconset. I am grateful for their efforts and hope others will join in enabling their plans to become a reality.

Sincerely,

- Tish Emerson
