RUSSELL BARTLETT captain of soccer and sailing BY SAM TOOLE After three tough injuries to the starting soccer team, they have bounced back and won their last two games against tough opponents. A big part of this can be attributed to senior co-captain and goaltender Russell Bartlett. The Nantucket Independent caught up with Russell this weekend before practice: ON SOCCER: Sam: How has the season gone so far? Russell: It was going good but then we hit a rough spot when we lost three of our starters. It put people in the mindset that the season was over already. I think we didn't play as well. The first game after that we tied Coyle- Cassidy, 1-1. But then Friday we came out with a 4-1 victory and then yesterday we had a 2- 0 shutout against Methuen, a tough Division 1 school. Both really helped boost our confidence. S: You're the team's goalie. How did you first become a goalie? R: I just always have been. I worked with Marco as goalie in the recreational league when I was younger. Then in the summer of 2000 I went to Europe for three weeks to the United Soccer Academy to train as a goalie. There wasn't a team in middle school, though, so it wasn't until 8th grade that I played on a team again. And then freshmen year I broke my collarbone so I wasn't able to play. But then sophomore year I got in goal and had a big 3-1 victory against Chatham in my first game. S: What's been the top highlight for your career to date? R: Sophomore year our 3-2 win in a penalty kick shoot out against Harwich in the first round of the South Sectional tournament to get into the quarterfinals. ON SCHOOL: S: What has been your favorite class in high school? R: Math and Science. And, I really like physics. S: Who has been your favorite teacher? R: Ms. Phaneuf. I really like her teaching style, it really suits me. S: Have you started to make a college list yet? R: I'm looking at film schools. I'm really feeling NYU or SVA right now. S: Any ideas of what you'll study when you get there? R: I'm planning on majoring in cinematography and production. S: What event are you most looking forward to during your senior year? R: Graduation. Although I love the island and I'll continue to come back, I feel I need to see the rest of the world. S: What's on your playlist right now? R: I'm all over the place. Some of my favorites are The Roots, Jurassic 5, Cold War Kids and Tokyo Police Club. S: What are your interests other than soccer? R: Sailing and Film. I've worked for the past two years with the Film Festival Teen View Program. Basically six kids from the Nantucket High School are selected to participate in a week long crash course in filmmaking and we make a film. Then the film is shown the last night before the feature film. S: What was the last good movie you saw? R: I saw "Rocket Science" which was the feature film of the Film Festival which was superb and, also at the festival, "Flakes," which was about capitalism and beating the man. Also "28 Weeks Later," which is the sequel to "28 Days Later." It's sick. I |
