FOOD FOR THOUGHT WITH BLACKSHAW Author Ken Blackshaw will discuss why "Nantucket is for the Birds!" during its popular Food for Thought Series on Thursday, September 27. at the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad St., noon. Free admission; bring your lunch.

CENTURIES-OLD ART TECHNIQUES AT THE 1800 HOUSE The Nantucket Historical Association announces its Early American Arts and Crafts class schedule for October. All classes are held at the recently restored 1800 House, 4 Mill St.

"…The mission of the Nantucket Historical Association is to preserve and interpret the history of Nantucket Island in order to inspire island residents, both year-round and seasonal."

Under the direction of 1800 House class coordinators Mary Lacoursiere and Betsey Braun, this educational program is dedicated to celebrating and reviving Nantucket's rich tradition in historic decorative arts and crafts. The restored early-nineteenth-century house lends itself beautifully to the wide cross-section of classes taught by talented instructors, all experts in their respective fields.

"The autumn classes will last for three days, with each class lasting three hours. One class will be offered in the morning, while the other class will be presented in the late afternoon, to accommodate those who are unable to attend day classes," said Betsey Braun. "We were very pleased with the popularity of our summer classes, and are delighted to be offering additional classes later in the season."

October offerings include:

Floorcloth Painting, with Mary Lacoursiere, October 9 - 11, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Making Sailors' Valentines, with Elizabeth Braun, October 23 - 25, 4 to 7 p.m.

Other holiday workshops will be offered in November, including the return of last year's popular "Making a Gingerbread House," so keep your ear to the pavement for dates and times.

Class sizes are limited, and advance registration and prepayment are required. All classes will be held at the 1800 House, 4 Mill Stre. To view the full schedule online, visit the NHA Web site at www.nha.org. To register for a class, please call Betsey Braun or Mary Emery Lacoursiere at 508-
