In their own words
The observations of two students
The landmark I would miss most from Nantucket is Brant Point Lighthouse. This is where I was baptised and where my uncle was married. This place holds many memories and I really would miss it!

Doing this project for the Whaling Museum I earned many skills in writing and camera use. Also now I am very much into photography and hope to maybe get a better camera and take pictures for newpapers or magazines. Most of my pictures I like to take are of places that hold memories for me or somewhere or even something that just looks beautiful!

Some of the challenges that occurred or me were that many of the times I wanted to be at places I was unable to drive there. Like for instance, I wanted to be at the Crabbing Pond just before the sunset but I didn't get there until almost dark.

I feel that the island's landmarks are threatened by development because every summer more people visit Nantucket. Adding to that, many of those people "fall in love" with it and decide to stay. This means that they might build a house, which takes up more space, or rent from someone else. Renting from someone else doesn't take anymore space up except that there may not be enough apartments for everyone else. Living in their new house, they will need food. To buy food you need a job to earn money and a car to get to the store. Also, if this chain continues, our food supply may not be high enough. Therefore, we will need to build another or a new grocery store.

The landmark that I would miss the most is the trail that is in the back of my neighborhood (Mizzenmast). I would miss it because I walk/ride my bike down it all of the time. I also fish in the pond and in the ocean at the end. If you know where to go there is even a secret path with carved coconut figures scattered around!

Out of the project, I got the chance to share my views about parts of Nantucket that are special to me, capture them on camera, and in the end I got to keep the digital camera. Some challenges were that the lighting was off, it rained, and the camera itself didn't have a good zoom so I had to get really close to the object/place that I photographed. Other than that it was problem-free.

I do fear that some of the island is threatened by over-development but most people want to keep our landmarks historic and will fight to keep them safe, so I'm not too worried. Anyway I think that the photography project is great and should keep going on for years to come and not just on Nantucket.
