 | | Last week's image featured Tony Sarg's sea monster, which was a cleverly orchestrated hoax played on the people of Nantucket in July 1937. The newspapers ran articles warning of the spotting of a sea monster for weeks, and photos of footprints "found" on the beach. Then the monster "landed" on South Beach, Washington Extension (apparently, they were aiming for Jetties, but the rough weather ruined their aim!). Tony Sarg, a longtime summer resident, designed balloons for the Macy Thanksgiving Day parades, and the sea monster was his invention; the hoax was planned by many. Thank you to all who responded: Robert Young, Jason Ross, Sheila Todd, Max Berry, Robert Mooney Jr., Robert Mooney Sr., Grace Yates, Florence Clifford, Richard Mack, Ann Oliver, John Stackpole and Andrew Arzt. |
