FOOTBALL SEASON OPENS WITH JV CONTEST
Nantucket's junior varsity officially began the 2007 football season at Mashpee last Thursday. Despite scoring the first points of the game, penalties hurt the young Whalers who lost a close one, 12-8.

Freshman Larry Woolfolk returned the game's opening kickoff 80 yards to start the year with a flourish. Woolfolk then tossed the conversion pass to Michael Molta for the 8-0 lead.

Mashpee scored in the second quarter, but Nantucket's defense denied the extra points for an 8-6 advantage. Mashpee added another touchdown with four minutes left in the game to close the scoring.

Nantucket's defense shone in the contest with three players nabbing key interceptions: Woolfolk, Jake Molloy and Josh Sibley-Liddle. Sibley-Liddle, unfortunately, suffered a fractured collarbone on the play and is likely lost for the season.

The JVs also had two touchdowns called back, both times on blocking from behind penalties.

"The kids did a great job, and I'm very proud of them," coach Dennis Caron said afterwards. "They played a true 40 minutes of football." THIS WEEK IN SPORTS
