Flash forward Wall space on Nantucket is expensive, explained island photographer Garth Grimmer. "And on average, the public normally doesn't pay as much for a photograph as it does for a painting, so most galleries would like to hang more expensive stuff." Partially because of this, and also because it has such a robust roster of photographers, the Artists' Association of Nantucket is hosting the first exhibit of photographs it's shown in a long while. Grimmer is organizing the show, which, unlike member shows, is having a jury pre-screen the photographers' submissions. "We wanted to make sure that if we got this shot, we'd get the best work we could show," said Grimmer. Grimmer asked the photographers, including Dan Sutherland, Lori Robertson and Mort Rogoff, to submit work that also highlighted a new or different aspect of their photography. Grimmer, for example, is submitting abstracts, as he mostly works in landscapes. Each photographer could submit as many as five works, knowing as many as all five and as few as one would be hung. For people who have been wanting to pick up works of island art but may not have it in the budget to spend several thousand dollars, this show might assist. As Grimmer noted, photographers do tend to price their works lower. This doesn't mean, of course, that the images are any less adept at capturing the beauty of this little hook of sand.
"The thing that's so nice about photography is that the light is so beautiful on Nantucket, and the camera can show it the way it is," Grimmer said. "In a photograph, you can also see how the island really appears. …One day, people might come to these photos to see how the island was years ago." |
