Windwalker Real Estate $5,300,000
A Crowning Achievement

I n the middle of Kite Hill Lane, in the Cliff area, sits a magnificent home, created with much care by one of the most respected builders and millwork crafters on the island. The home occupies the spot at the crown of the hill - as if on a pedestal - held up as one of the finest examples of the homebuilder's art. And deservedly so.

As you step through the front door with its 30 small, square, divided panes and antique cast steel lock and hardware, the first thing you notice is the heart pine floor. Painstakingly finished by decorative painter Tina Law, the foyer and hallway are decked in a wonderful two-tone diamond stain. One tone is a muted smoke, the other a warm antique hue. Set at the corner of each of the diamonds is a small, perfect black square. This expertly executed floor pattern is a harbinger of that which is to come on your tour - expert craftsmanship literally around every corner. In the foyer, to your right, you'll find a large mudroom and storage area that is ideal for families with children and grandchildren. Coats, boots and bags are stored behind painted panel walls accented by an overhead transom light. Straight ahead, you'll find the winding stairway to the second floor. You will note the antique Italianate wroughtiron panel here set into the wall that serves to let light from beyond into the stairway area.

To your left, and one step down, you find yourself in the home's focal point - a wide-open space comprising the kitchen, living room and dining area. The kitchen is a vision in Tuscan styles, with a large, square island topped by a slab of polished granite in earthy, warm tones. The island itself is faced in chestnut, as is the mantelpiece in the adjacent living room area. Toffee-colored tiles make up the ornate backsplash and spice nook behind the stainless, restaurant grade gas range.

The cabinets are custom, of course, painted a simple white and trimmed in natural strips of chestnut with bead details and distinctive, yet simple, oval hardware. Behind one door, hidden completely by the mill-worker's art, is a large and deep refrigerator of the highest quality. In two drawers are two more refrigerated spaces. And disguised by a slab of antique wormwood with a simple bronze pull is a top-quality dishwasher. This kitchen is a showplace, and one could write an entire article describing it alone - or perhaps even a sonnet.

Adjacent to the kitchen is the living room with a large and inviting hearth, and next to that is the dining area. A half-wall of window panes framed by antique hand-shaped and carved pine timbers divides the kitchen from the dining room area. Through a solid custom-milled divided-light door, you find yourself in the very green and lush back yard. The patio area is accented by a trellis and mature grape vines - a continuation of the Tuscan theme to the out-of-doors.

Also on the first floor are an open den area and a very sunny and welcoming guest bedroom. Between the two is a powder room with an amazing feature, a simple French door leading to the home's spacious outdoor shower in the rear of the home.

The second story features a master bedroom suite with a wonderful grape-vine-accented balcony overlooking the courtyard, a double-wide day bed crafted of expertly finished tiger maple, a large bath, massive closet, and an adjoining nursery or sitting room. Two other bedrooms share a large double-sink bathroom with a claw-footed tub and shower.

On the third floor, you find yourself in a cozy guest suite which sleeps four and features a wonderful bathroom with a large, square inset tub sitting inside a sunny, south-facing shed dormer. The view from the widow's walk above is a stunning 360- degree panorama of the harbor and the island's rolling interior.

The tour ends with a trip to the basement which features a large finished family room space and a half-bath. The woodworking here is equally impressive, as are the floor tiles which are imported from France and once served as rustic roofing tiles.

This unique and expertly crafted, five-bedroom, four-and-one-half bath home steps from town and the

Cliff is offered at $5,300,000. I
