My View
GREAT KIDS DESERVE GREAT SCHOOLS
By Bob Pellicone
We begin this school year with tremendous pride in our school staff, our student body, and in the programs we have recently put in place to improve school performance.

Nantucket's students are making significant, incremental academic gains, thanks to your support and to the hard work and collaboration of our professional staff. At the same time we have been establishing and supporting a safe and positive school environment where all children feel safe, comfortable, and welcomed from the beginning of their school

experience. Following are some

examples of recent and ongoing accomplishments in your schools:

• During the month of September we will begin our work with the four ad hoc committees: class size, behavioral management, building schedules and differentiated instruction. A continuation and differentiated instruction. A continuation of our cyclical review of school policies, curricula and programs, these groups are local, impartial think tanks of a sort, designed to examine what we currently are doing in these four areas. Their findings will provide data that will strengthen and improve practices so that we may move our district forward. Decisions should be made based upon data and collaborative deliberation and solutions. We will use the information collected and presented by these committees as we seek to achieve our ultimate goal: Always Improving Our Service To Our Students.

• A curriculum council, comprised of staff and administrators, was formed last year. The council has already completed curriculum maps K-12 in science, physical education and health. This year their work will primarily focus on literacy and language immersion. This important work by our staff is critical and it will help ensure that the curriculum is implemented appropriately across the grades.

• We continue to emphasize the importance of a strong administrative team. Karen McGonigle, our new Director of Technology, comes to us with a wealth of experience in the public school arena. We are excited to have her onboard. Our searches for outstanding principals at NES and CPS will continue. I will be engaging a firm to aid us in our search process. In this way we will be able to cast a wide net in helping us to find the best candidates for these positions. Dr. Carlos Colley, Assistant Superintendent, will be the interim principal at the elementary school during the search period. He spent a great deal of time last year working on curriculum and evaluating staff at NES and he will provide consistency for our staff and students there. We are pleased to announce that Barbara White will be the interim principal at CPS, during the search period. Barbara is a longtime teacher, recently retired from the system. Along with her Mass. administrative certification, she brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the system. We welcome Barbara back and are confident that she will provide excellent leadership to the middle school. We are poised to open all three schools this year with a great staff in place. This promises to be a banner year for the children of the district.

To be successful in the 21st century, students must be exposed to rigorous standards and curricula. They must achieve and aspire to higher goals as they progress through their school years. To that end we will continue to evaluate and fine tune our programs to ensure that all children receive a quality education. We must hold high expectations for each of them and help each of them achieve his/her fullest potential. The community's ongoing commitment and investment in Nantucket Public Schools is critical as we move forward. We appreciate your support and we will continue to build upon our successes. The students deserve nothing less than the very best schools we can provide.

A new school year lies ahead, and I want to welcome you all to its promise. We have worked hard to provide the best programs we can for your children. I see great things on the horizon for Nantucket Public Schools. Thank you for your support, and keep watching for our updates.
