John Devaney
Ten of my favorite things
Artist John Devaney keeps a pocketful of Nantucket scenes as totems for his love and sometimes not-love relationship with this island - auctions, ferry arrivals, cars on the beach. His perspective slightly askew, his work exhibits a sense of humor that satirizes the island's least cherished conventions.

"Self-Portrait"
This week, Devaney's work will appear in a solo exhibit at the South Wharf Gallery, which is now located at 3 India Street. South Wharf Gallery owner Mary Beth Splaine called this sense of humor a "palette cleanser" in August.

WHAT I LOVE:

1. After 16 years, arriving on the ferry is still a thrill

2. The way the downtown elms pull up the sidewalk bricks, "making waves"

3. Cheese soup AND a cheeseburger at Bro'hood in late fall

4. Seeing chunky continents of mist traveling over the beach and pond

5. My dog (Jasmine) sleeping

WHAT I DON'T LOVE

6. The barbaric habit of driving on any beach (See "The Last Beach Driver.")

7. Showing off decades of beach driving permits on bumpers

"The Last Beach Driver"
8. The old boy/girl network on our Town Boards that promote senseless, destructive development

NOW BACK TO LOVES 9. The sound of waves 10. The starry nights
