Chamber building for sale
BY MARY LANCASTER INDEPENDENT WRITER
The historic building at 48 Main St. that now houses the Island Breeze tee-shirt shop and The Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce has been put up for sale by building owner Patrick Cauley of Breezin-up Inc. based in Allentown, Pa.

Patience Killen, who has the exclusive listing with Jordan Real Estate, confirmed the sales price of $4,150,000. Killen sold the building to Cauley in September 1993.

Cauley, whose clothing business was founded in 1984 and who manufactures all goods in the United States, said it is too soon to discuss details of what will happen with his Main Street store if the building sells, and added that the sale itself is not definite.

"This is one of a number of different strategies on the inside of the business we're thinking about," he said. "Nothing is written in ink. None of [the strategies] at this point are more than ideas. It's a thriving business, it's just that right now we're in the middle of possibilities for ideas."

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tracy Bakalar said the office's three-year lease is up at the end of February and she hopes it can remain in the heart of town "to help sustain the yearround vitality of downtown and to provide easy availability and access to visitors."

Bakalar said the chamber has been at 48 Main St. since 1993 after moving from The Pacific Club where it had its office from the time it was incorporated in 1954.

"We've let the listing agent know we'd like to stay here," said Bakalar. "We're hoping to renew the lease until they have a buyer and that any buyer would allow us to stay."

In the middle of the last century, the building was used by Maud Dinsmore for her dress shop. In 1973 the building was bought by Nantucket Bank for a branch office. In 1980 Reggie Levine took ownership of the property then sold it in 1986 to James Wheeler who in 1988 sold it to Joseph Passel. In 1993 it was purchased by Patrick
