Nantucket's got Spookie Daly Pride
BY SAM TOOLE INDEPENDENT INTERN
One of Nantucket's favorite indie bands, Spookie Daly Pride, is returning to the island to perform for the seventh year this upcoming week. The four piece band hailing Boston, Massachusetts is a mix of musical talent like you've never seen before.

COURTESY SPOOKIE DALY PRIDE Spookie Daly Pride is Tommy Diehl on drums, Spookie Daly on vocals and piano, Pete Witham on guitar and Floyd Kellogg on bass.
With Spookie Daly on piano/vocals, Pete Witham on guitar, Tommy Diehl on drums and Floyd Kellogg on bass, they run the musical gamut from jazz to hip-hop to reggae to roots rock to funk to a little bit of everything else mixed in between. Bass player Floyd Kellogg describes their music as, "Piano driven rock and roll with elements of punky ragtime and stompy swing music."

The group's live shows are what have separated them from the pack, though. Described by some to be "the most fun you will have with your clothes on," (myspace.com/spookydalypride) their live performances are essentially a promise that you will soon be jumping up and down and dancing like crazy to their "hip-hop infused brand of funk rock." Because of this, the band has gained a strong grassroots fan base in different parts of the nation.

They were originally signed by Funzalo Records and released two albums, "Marshmallow Pie" in 2001 and "Medicine Chest" in 2005. Both are filled with creativity and enthusiasm - and are just fun albums to listen to. "It is rare to find art that strives for and attains originality and still maintains a universal accessibility. Spookie Daly Pride does just that," said the Union News. Although the band is no longer signed to Funzalo Records, publicist Lee Gutowski said that after they played somewhere they were always booked again for the next year immediately. "Once people see them live they get really hooked."

The band went on hiatus for a short time but just started to do shows together recently. They have just been playing in different parts of the Northeast because of their ties to many venues. In terms of their show it is pretty similar to a few years ago. The only difference is that it is no longer any member's full-time job so they put absolutely everything into the show with a lot less pressure. "We play like we're not going to be back." So you can very well imagine how great the shows are; a band known for their great live performances, playing like it is the last one they will do.

Since they have been playing and visiting Nantucket for quite some time they now have a loyal fan base on the island to return to each year. They have many friends here and they really enjoy playing at the Chicken Box. Although when visiting they normally do not the tourist things like go fishing or go to the beach they still have a great time. They visit friends at Cisco Brewery, hang out and just play good music. "Mainly when we're here we jump into the night life and all of us really

have a good time," said Floyd. I
