From the Sidelines "I'm glad he had the opportunity in the offseason to be in a competition like that," said NHS swimming and diving coach Jim Pignato. "He really wants to be a yearround swimmer, and here on Nantucket it's tough to do that. Any opportunity to swim against competition like that is a bonus for him. It's great for the program and if Beau can lead the way here, hopefully that will open the way for other Nantucket swimmers to take part in this meet." This is the second year Garufihas taken part in the Bay State Games. Last year he took second place in the same two events. RACE FOR OPEN SPACE The sixth annual Race for Open Space takes place this Saturday, July 21. The 5K run/walk benefits island conservation efforts and starts at the Westmoor Club on Cliff Road. Registration opens at 7 a.m. The race starts at 8 a.m. MEMBERS WANTED Membership packets and brochures for the Great Harbor Yacht Club are available at the former Tuckernuck Inn at 60 Union Street, now the base of member operations. The membership office is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or call membership coordinators Holly Bliss or Beth Winn at 325-5200. WOODEN BAT LEAGUE STARTS UP The wooden bat baseball league begins its season tomorrow night at 5:15 p.m. when Barber's Black Sheep take on Toscana at the Tom Nevers diamond.
