Born and raised in Philadelphia, Marge graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1938, and completed a year towards her Master's Degree in Education there in 1939. She was married in 1941, gave birth to five children, divorced in 1960.
Faced with the prospect of raising and supporting her children as a single parent, Marge Baker drew on her schooling in education and taught home-bound physically challenged children, becoming one of the first teachers accredited in Special Education in the Princeton (NJ) Regional School System. After raising her children in Princeton and summering on Nantucket, Marge retired to live on the Island full time.
Marge was a proud Daughter of the American Revolution, Abiah Folger Franklin Chapter, a member of Nantucket Yacht Club, Sankaty Head Golf Club and Cliffside Beach Club. She relished her rounds of golf and bridge with her friends. She was a lover of animals, Island conservation and supported many other causes. She enjoyed going out with friends and family to her favorite restaurants and clubs and most of all looked forward to visits with her children and grandchildren.
Marge was predeceased by her daughter, Marjorie, in 1947. She is survived by two daughters, Leanne (Lili) Ayres Baker, of Nantucket; Gertrude (Trudy) Warner Baker Millar, of Boxford, MA; two sons, Elias (Bloxy) Bloxom Baker, of Lakeville, CT; and Warren von Credo Baker, of Chicago, IL; and seven grandchildren. She is also survived by her beloved cocker spaniel, Toastie, and her canary, Petey.
There will be a memorial service to honor her memory at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on August 24, at 11 a.m..
Contributions in her memory may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 20 Fair Street; or to Nantucket MSPCA on
