AT ITS MEETING TONIGHT, JULY 18,
THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN WILL:
• Hold a public hearing to consider approval of a common victualler's license for Philip Dickey, manager of The Shack at 63 Surfside Road (See separate story).
• Hold a public hearing to consider regulations for street openings. • Hear a town administrator's report, if any.
• Hear of the action on final language in the Nantucket Sewer Act proposal before it goes before the legislature for consideration (See item below from last week's selectmen's meeting).
AT ITS MEETING ON JULY 11, THE SELECTMEN (ALL PRESENT):
• Made appointments to the Harbor Plan Implementation Committee and Cemetery Commission Workgroup. Diane Holdgate was appointed to the Cemetery Commission and was the sole applicant. The Harbor Plan Committee's four at-large seats went to Diane Coombs, Leslie Johnson, Sarah Oktay and Carl Sjolund. Shellfish and Harbor Advisory Board members Peter Boyce, Bam LaFarge and Doug Smith were endorsed to sit on the committee (See separate story with excerpts from the successful candidates' applications).

• Endorsed Abatement Advisory Committee appointments for Judith Moran, Joe McLaughlin and Flint Ranney, who were chosen by Town Assessor Debbie Dilworth. All three have served since the 1994 inception of the committee.
• Unanimously approved a request from the Nantucket Land Council for a conservation restriction at 141 Madaket Road to preserve a densely wooded area measuring approximately half a mile. Land Council executive director Cormac Collier called the property donation from Walter and Susan Birge significant, stressing that the restriction preserves a parcel from Eel Point Road nearly all the way to Warren's Landing.
• Unanimously approved a request from Duane Jones to accept a grant for a bike and pedestrian easement at 39 Nobadeer Farm Road in conjunction with Planning Board conditions. The easement has no cost to the town.
• Voted 3 - 2 (Kopko and Willauer opposed) to accept a request from Eldredge Surveying and Engineering for improvement of West Chester Street near Westmoor Farms, a new subdivision that exits on West Chester Street. The improvement includes paving a stretch past Pilgrim Road to Crooked Lane. Planning Board chairman Frank Spriggs encouraged the board to accept the offer because it will help protect adjacent wetlands.

• Heard an update of the selectmen's 2007-2008 goals process. Willauer said the board has already had several discussions and will incorporate appropriate proposals from the public. He added that the process will filter to departments which will create their own goals and objectives.
• Unanimously approved 2007 end of year budget transfers from the town's general fund approved on June 28 by the Finance Committee. The transfer total is $290,936 with the largest amount of $254,300 going to the landfill for the expense of professional services.
• Unanimously voted to sign a Determination of Uniqueness associated with the town's proposed purchase of the Reith liquor store property at 10 and 12 Washington St. to use as a NRTA bus parking hub. Moving the buses off the street would open up about 10 citizen parking spots. Audience member Curtis Barnes expressed concern over traffic issues that might arise. Willauer's questions included why the buses must be so big and whether the hub should be out of town where riders could park and take the shuttle to town. Chadwick, noting that the $3.5 selling price is below the property's assessed value, said a vote at the July 26 Special Town Meeting would authorize the town to buy the land but not be binding. "At the end of the day we could sell it and still be ahead of the game," Chadwick noted of the potential after acquisition of the area.
• Scheduled a speaker phone discussion between the board and Town Counsel Paul DeRensis for Monday, July 16 at 10 a.m. in the Land Bank conference room to go over points within the proposed Nantucket Sewer Act before submitting the text to the legislature. That meeting was posted and was open to the public. A July 17 legislative hearing previously scheduled to occur on the island was cancelled, and the majority of the board felt that since the text deadline had been removed more review of particular items in the Act was in order. Once the language is approved, set to be voted on at the selectmen's July 18 session, Nantucket's Legislative Liaison Tim Madden will take the bill to the State House.
