"Nation of Nantucket" by Edward Byers One of the best of the many Nantucket histories written has proved to be Edward Byers' "Nation of Nantucket" ($25), originally published in 1987 and reprinted now in a sturdy paperback. This history emphasizes the societal and political influences during Nantucket's greatest growth period, 1660-1820. A must for any serious Nantucket library. - Mimi Beman, Mitchell's Book Corner Nantucket Bookworks 25 Broad Street, 228-4000 "Five Skies" by Ron Carlson "Five Skies" is the story of three men, all at low-points in their lives, who come together in a construction project on an isolated bluff, high in the Idaho Rockies. The simple, beautiful writing describes the day-to-day tasks that absorb these men and the way in which their dedication to their work and the gorgeous surroundings begins to revive each of them.
Nantucket Bookworks Nantucket Atheneum 1 India Street, 228-1110 "Tunjur Tunjur Tunjur!: A Palestinian Arab Folktale" Retold by Margaret Read MacDonald and Illustrated by Alik Arzoumanian Awoman longs to have a child of her own - even if it is "nothing more than a cooking pot." Her wish comes true, and Little Pot appears. Little Pot wants to explore the wide world, and although her mother reluctantly wonders, "How will you know right from wrong?" she agrees to let Little Pot go alone to market. Little Pot's subsequent mischievous behavior and her final comeuppance are told with vibrant acrylic paintings containing cultural details. The rhythm of the narrative and its repetitive phrases invite listener participation. Reviewers list this picture book as appropriate for preschool - second grade, but I heard an audience of fifth graders repeating lines along with me, and saw them give knowing nods regarding Little Pot's fate.
Camera Shop & Nantucket Video 32 Main Street, 228-0101 "Planet Earth" By far the best nature series ever made, "Planet Earth" is an 11-part series that follows up "The Blue Planet - Seas of Life." Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, each episode covers a specific wildlife habitat and geographical region. Shot in high definition and filmed from every angle, each episode is packed with stunning and breathtaking images. On the final episode, Sir David has the last word, "We can destroy or we can cherish - the choice is ours." - Laurie Donovan, manager, Camera Shop & Nantucket Video Orange Street Video 117 Orange Street, 228-5806 "Kidnapped" (the complete series) In this sadly cancelled television drama, Timothy Hutton plays Conrad Cain, whose teenage son is kidnapped. After an FBI agent doesn't make any immediate progress in the case, Cain also hires a private investigator (played by Jeremy Sisto) to go beyond the law to find his son. Even though the show was cancelled, the best episodes, contained on this disc, are the ones you didn't see.
