From The Sidelines NHS ATHLETES SELECTED FOR CLASSIC Cassie Moran and Grace Anne Tornovish have been selected to take part in the Cape Cod Classic field hockey tournament, to be held July 22 and 23 at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. The Cape Cod Classic features top players from New England high schools. Moran will be a senior at Nantucket High School in the fall, while Tornovish is entering her junior year. RIBBON CUTTING FRIDAY The Sailing Center at the Great Harbor Yacht Club, a building that will become the hub of GHYC's sailing programs, is completed. The official ribbon cutting ceremony, to be held this Friday, July 6, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., will mark a new era in the history of the GHYC and Nantucket's waterfront. Gary Jobson, the GHYC's Executive Director of Sailing will preside over the opening ceremony. The GHYC sailing program is in its third year of operation. Gary Jobson is a former All-American collegiate sailor. He won the America's Cup in 1977 as tactician for Ted Turner. As a broadcaster/producer (he is ESPN's Sailing Analyst), lecturer, and writer (he is an editor-at-large for Sailing World and Cruising World magazines), Jobson is the pre-eminent ambassador for sailing in the U.S. Great Harbor Yacht Club is a private equity club that is currently under construction at 96 Washington St. If you are interested in attending please contact the office by calling 325-5200 or email Maeve Markey at mmarkey@ghyc.com. SKATING CLASSES BEGIN Youth skating classes at Nantucket Ice begin Tuesday, July 10. Synchro-Skills for all levels will meet Tuesdays at 4 p.m. Moves in the Field, figure skating for preliminary and prepreliminary level skaters, will meet Wednesdays at 4 p.m. Both are eight-week programs. SKATE WITH SPONGE BOB Families are invited to skate with Sponge Bob Square Pants from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, at Nantucket Ice on Backus Lane. Public skating prices apply. *Season Best ** Personal Course Record Runners meet Tuesdays rain or shine at 5:15 p.m. at the corner of Beach and Easton streets for a 5:30 p.m. start. The 5K (3.1 miles) run is on paved roads over a mostly flat course, that is accurately wheel measured, with one hill and some moderate grades.
