AT ITS MEETING OF JUNE 20, THE BOARD OF

SELECTMEN:

+ Heard an announcement from Police Chief William Pittman about a joint venture that day between the immigration service and Coast Guard to round up 18 foreign internationals on Nantucket who had been victimizing the community and violating the law. Pittman said not all of them were in the country illegally. "We targeted nobody because they were here illegally," he said. "We all have a right to be safe here."

+ Discussed but did not release executive session minutes from a June 13 meeting. Selectman Chadwick favored releasing the minutes to the public as did Selectman Roggeveen, but the disclosure was opposed by Selectman Kopko who said he wanted time to review them, even though Chadwick said he emailed the minutes to all members after the meeting.

+ Voted unanimously to close the hearing on a noise bylaw waiver request for a July 14 wedding. The hearing had been continued three times and the selectmen voted to take no further action on it.

+ Held a public hearing on applications for the Harbors Plan Implementation Committee and Cemetery Commission Workgroup.

+ Voted unanimously to approve an application for a common victualler's license for Nantucket Ice Cream at 44 Straight Wharf. The shop, formerly the All Serve building, will sell 12 flavors of ice cream and t-shirts.

+ Unanimously approved an application from Walk The Dog, d/b/a Cambridge Street Victuals, for an entertainment license. Initially, the entertainment will be on two nights a week from 9 to 11 p.m., but the board will allow management to return if they wish to extend the number of nights or time.

+ Voted 4 to 1 (Kopko opposed) to approve an application from American Seasons Corp. for a seasonal wine package store license. Wine purchases would be made by the case and delivered, so no retail business would be conducted on the Centre Street premises.

BrianChadwick
+ Unanimously approved three Verizon requests for pole relocations on Walsh Street and Western Avenue.

+ Unanimously approved a National Grid application to install underground wiring near 44 Surfside Road, which is for The Muse installation of air-conditioning.

+ Held a public hearing to follow up on work done at The Muse to mitigate noise and light pollution. The Muse entertainment license was restricted in April to disallow entertainment after 11 p.m. due to neighbors' complaints. The air-conditioning is the last component of the Muse mitigation plan that needs to be completed so doors and windows can be kept closed to control noise, according to the club's attorney James Merberg. Selectman Reinhard said he has heard positive comments from neighbors since the project began. "I've never seen such a response as I've seen here (in 31 years)," said Kopko. "They have made significant changes that have been monitored by officers," said Police Chief Pittman, adding that police have received no complaints since May 20 and the five prior to that date were from only two sources. The board voted unanimously to allow the club's entertainment license to continue in its original form.

MikeKopko
+ Unanimously approved an application from New Life Ministries International to obtain a public assembly permit for a fundraiser on August 4 and 5.

+ Unanimously voted to raise taxi rates by $1 except for in town where the rate will remain the same. The new fares, meant to help offset the high cost of gas, become effective July 1 and will be reviewed in six months.

+ Unanimously approved amending the town regulations for charter, tour and limousine services to provide an additional license for a wheelchair-accessible tour van.

+ Unanimously voted for a modest increase in the annual rate of landfill user fees.

+ Discussed but took no action on the June 27 hearing scheduled at Boston's State House for Nantucket's proposed Sewer Act approved at the 2007 Town Meeting.

+ Unanimously approved July 26 as the date for a Special Town Meeting on whether the town should purchase the Dreamland Theater to serve as a community performing arts center, inclusion of a small parcel of land associated with the new round-about and consideration of selling two town owned properties at Warren's Landing and in the Surfside area to the Land Bank and using the revenue to buy the Washington Street Island Spirits property. Though no plans have been finalized, if the latter occurs, some NRTA shuttles could be parked at the now closed liquor store which would free up citizen parking spaces along Washington Street. In the event Rick Ulmer (See June 20 edition) buys the Dreamland, that article would be removed from the warrant.
