HALBERSTAM'S DRIVER TO BE CHARGED The driver of the car in which David Halberstam died will be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, according to an article that appeared in the Washington Post.

The Post reported that Kevin Jones, 26, a graduate student in journalism at the University of California at Berkeley, "ran a red light while making an illegal left turn" and that "investigators determined that Jones made an illegal left turn into the path of a car that had a green light."

Halberstam, a longtime Nantucket summer resident, was a passenger in the car and on his way to interview football legend Y.A. Tittle when the crash occurred in Menlo Park, Calif. on April 23. His long-awaited book about the Korean War, "The Coldest Winter," is to be published posthumously in the fall. ISLAND WISHES FR. CARON FOND FAREWELL After seven years as pastor of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Isle, the Reverend Paul Caron was feted at the Faregounds Restaurant after he said his final Mass Sunday morning.

Hundreds of parishioners and islanders of all denominations turned out to thank Fr. Caron for his years of service to Nantucket and to wish him well in his new assignment at St. Rita's Church in Marion.

Among the gathering were many of his fellow "bench rats," denizens of the Main Street bench whose philosophical opinions and views on current events are widely sought and highly treasured.

TOWN CONSIDERS PURCHASE OF ISLAND SPIRITS BUILDING Last week the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved July 26 as the date for a Special Town Meeting on whether the town should purchase the Dreamland Theater to serve as a community performing arts center, inclusion of a small parcel of land associated with the new round-about and consideration of selling two town-owned properties at Warren's Landing and in the Surfside area to the Land Bank then using the revenue to buy the Washington Street Island Spirits property. Though no plans have been finalized, if the latter occurs, some NRTA shuttles could be parked at the now closed liquor store which would free up citizen parking spaces along Washington Street. In the event Rick Ulmer (See June 20 edition) buys the Dreamland, that

article would be removed from the warrant.
