Aradio station decided to bury a radio DJ underground for 46 days to break a record, and there always have to be two men on duty to guard the air pipe, which is just a PVC pipe sticking out of the ground. A security guard and paramedic guard the midnight shift - making sure, if it rains, he doesn't drown, or if he's in trouble, that they can hear this little bell that he rings. As you can imagine, the two are not at the top of their game. So the film is condensed into following them for 46 days. And they're not the most responsible of people.
What does being included in the
festival mean to you?
I'm a working filmmaker, mostly in TV. Recently I did "Rollergirls," a reality series for A&E, and I have a moviebased talk show coming out for cable this year. So this film is not a calling card I'm trying to send out into the industry. I have a friend named Jack Pendarvis who wrote a book of short stories, and this short is based on one of his short stories. I adapted it. I made it with a group of friends, because I thought it would be funny and fun to do.
What do you hope to get out
of its screening?
I actually made a feature film called "American Detective" that premiered at the Nantucket Film Festival in 1999, so this is my first trip back since then, and I'm really looking forward to it, because Nantucket had the best audiences of any festival I went to. We had a soldout screening at the Dreamland, and while I was watching, the audience laughed at every single joke, they sighed when they were supposed to. And we got great reviews there. So for me, it's exciting to be back. There's a lot less expectation with this short than there was with my feature. Generally, the crowds aren't quite as strong for shorts. So, I'm just hoping to have some fun with it and I'm also hoping to meet new filmmakers. Through the years, I've made a lot of great friends through film festivals.
