New Pleasant Street post office unveiled
Aluminum post office boxes are ready to receive the letters, catalogs and packages at the new U.S. Postal Service building for mail going to 02584 on Nantucket. The building itself is ready, its parking lot paved and parking spaces marked. And the easement between the property owned by developer Al DeMarco where the new post office is on Pleasant Street at the new roundabout and Bank of America's Sparks Avenue branch has been signed by both parties.
However, the delivery of a new postal site open for business is being held up by two filings, according to DeMarco's island attorney, Arthur Reade.
The Planning Board, probably by June 30, must file its May 23 decision approving the new postal facility at the Town Clerk's office. There then follows a 20-day appeal period. Reade added that DeMarco's site engineer, Leo Asadoorian, must also file his final as-built plan, the last survey of the property showing and verifying that conditions on the ground are as DeMarco says they are on his plans.
Once both of these filings are complete, the building inspector must sign DeMarco's certificate of occupancy before the post office can open its doors to the public.
