CHECK OUT THAT HORIZONTAL STABILIZER! The annual Airport Day at ACK is set for Saturday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the ramp to the left of the Administration Building. Visitors can meet t.he people who make the Airport work, see airplanes, fire trucks, snowplows and other equipment and view a static display of antique and unique aircraft.

Visitors can also preview the upcoming Aviation Career Education Camp (ACE), for students in middle and high school (set to start on Monday, June 25), along with the plans for the Terminal Expansion. There will be ongoing drawings for door prizes, as well as free hot dogs, ice cream and cold drinks.

ULTIMATE SURVIVOR Jay Lovering has won this year's Nantucket Chamber of Commerce $10,000 Survivor Challenge. Including Lovering, the final ten "survivors" were Rick Atherton, Linda Bellevue, Cormac Collier, Stephanie Correia, Jerry Daub, John Fee, Christine Holdgate, Pat Kleinert and Rhoda Weinman,.

STEADY AS SHE GOES ROB BENCHLEY/The Independent Claire Minihan gets a steadying hand from high school teacher Chuck Colley as she tests the seaworthiness of the dory "Woodchuck" on its maiden voyage in Nantucket Harbor recently. Students in Colley's Woodworking II class built the classic Grand Banks boat from scratch over the past two years. Its strakes, thwarts, gunwales and even the copper nails were all made by hand. Colley said the project is a healthy mix of woodworking, geometry and history. Also pictured, from left, are fellow shipbuilders Beau Garufi, Jordan Beans, Delroy Lawrence and Annie Sager.

Proceeds from the event - held last Thursday at the Faregrounds - will support the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce's Scholarship Fund for Nantucket students.
