"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini
This could easily be my pick for 'book of the year.' "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is the story of two women: one, the illegitimate daughter of a rich businessman; the other, the educated beautiful young daughter of a professor and his "liberated" wife. Their lives intertwine, come loose and rejoin again in a landscape populated by husbands, children, friends, war, beauty and brutality. The beauty of Hosseini's writing will leave you startled and reeling with the kind of ache in your heart that only dreams leave behind. It's not only a beautiful story but also a lesson in history. I recommend this to all book lovers, whether you like history, biography or fiction. Pick this one up; it will leave you wishing it were a few hundred pages longer.
