Figawi High School Invitational results
Twelve crews from ten schools competed in the eighth annual Figawi High School Invitational regatta held just off the Boat Basin finger piers Sunday morning.

ROB BENCHLEY/The Independent The Figawi High School Invitational takes place just outside the Boat Basin entrance. The Nantucket High School team (above) competed in the midst of Excellence III.
Barnstable High School, which had two crews competing, took first and third places, with Martha's Vineyard coming in second place. Nantucket, which also fielded two crews, placed ninth and tenth.

The invitational regatta was originally conceived by Nantucket Boat Basin director George Bassett and former Figawi chairman Howard Penn as a way to promote sailing on the Cape and Islands. According to this year's Figawi program, "the goal of the regatta is for high school students to have a fun, competitive and rewarding day of racing. Competitors include not only some of the best sailors from each school, but also sailors who have shown a great commitment to their teams and teammates and are chosen by their coaches because of their sportsmanship and hard work."

"This is a wonderful experience for all our kids," said Sandwich sailing coach Dave O'Hara, whose teams have competed in the regatta since its inception.

The regatta is sponsored by Nantucket Community Sailing, Harbor Fuel, the Nantucket Boat Basin, the Nantucket Yacht Club and the Figawi Charities Committee.
