Strong first half leads Whalers into playoffs Hakeem Lecky scored a team-record five goals and seven assists, while Keith Clemens had another strong game in goal to help lead the Whalers into the state tournament. Cape Cod Academy came into the game with a record of 6-3, and early in the first quarter scored a quick goal that would be the first and last goal it would score in the period. In just the first quarter for Nantucket, however, Mark Dwyer scored twice and had one assist, Lecky scored twice and had two assists, Will Martin scored once and had one assist and Gaven Norton scored once. At the end of the first quarter Nantucket was dominating the action and the score was 6-1, Nantucket. The second quarter was more of the same. Clemens had many great saves, while only giving up one goal in the quarter. Lecky scored twice and had one assist, Martin had one goal and two assists, Norton scored twice, Ray DeCosta had one assist and Hunter Day had one goal, making the score at the half, 12-2, Nantucket. There was no catching the Whalers now. In the third quarter there were not many goals scored, with only two by each team. Nantucket's third quarter goal-scorers were Matt Dunham and DeCosta. Both goals were assisted by Lecky. The fourth quarter saw four goals by Nantucket but only two goals from Cape Cod Academy. The goals by Nantucket were from Mark Dwyer, Lecky and Norton, with assists from Henry Farrell and Lecky. The final, 18-6, score was a great team effort by the Whalers. With the win, Nantucket was able to push its record to 9-8, giving the team great momentum going into the playoffs. Nantucket finished the season 9-9 after a loss to Scituate last Thursday. The top three goal scorers against Cape Cod Academy were: Lecky with five goals, Norton with 4 goals and Dwyer with three goals. The top three assist makers were Lecky with seven, Dwyer with three and Martin with three. Although the offense and the midfield scored all the goals, the game would have been much closer if it was not for the stellar Nantucket defense.
