I ON SELECTMEN
AT ITS MEETING ON MAY 23, THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN, CONVENING AS THE BOARD OF HEALTH:
+ Unanimously approved variance requests for an alternative septic system at 24 Cambridge St. in Madaket and a new well at 6 Tennessee Ave. in Madaket.

PattyRoggeveen
+ Unanimously approved a tight (septic) tank at 61 Tennessee Ave.

+ Heard an update on Nantucket and Madaket Harbors watershed inspections. Health Inspector Richard Ray said 257 properties in the Nantucket Harbor area have been inspected and 20 were found to be failed. In Madaket, 51 of its 699 properties have been inspected with 11 found to have failed. Ray said the biggest problem area in Madaket is along Tennessee Ave. where installations on small lots require repair.

+ Heard a public information announcement on zoonotic diseases relating to ticks and mosquitoes. Ray reiterated his prior requests that residents get rid of containers in yards that hold standing water and also flush out and regularly refill bird baths. He reported awareness of six cases of Lyme disease so far this year but no cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Large bird species will be sent to the state for testing for West Nile virus.

AllenReinhard
+ Heard an announcement that Assistant Health Inspector Artell Crowley passed a national exam and is now qualified as a registered sanitarian.

CONVENING AS THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS:

+ Unanimously approved a request from the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum for an easement gift that will allow alteration of the layout of its retaining wall on Union Street to improve the vehicle turning radius for cars and trucks coming around the corner of Union and Francis streets.

+ Heard the list of county commissioners appointed as representatives to workgroups and committees.

CONVENING AS THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN:

+ Heard an announcement that the new town Web site launched on Tues., May 22.

+ Heard a disclosure from Town Administrator Libby Gibson relating to the fact that her husband, Deputy Police Chief Charles Gibson, will be appointed as project manager for the new public safety facility at 2 Fairgrounds Road, a temporary duty in addition to his position with the police department that will be at no additional cost to the town. Because he will not report to her, the board determined there is no substantial conflict of interest regarding that appointment.

WhiteyWillauer
+ Heard a review of the June 5 Special Election ballot containing one, $4.3 million capital override question. If the override passes it is anticipated that it will add $14 a year to residential property tax bills until the debt is paid.

+ Unanimously voted not to hold a Special Town Meeting in October, planned primarily to address the Harbors Plan. The plan has been submitted to the state's Coastal Zone Management agency for review and will come before voters at next April's Annual Town Meeting.

+ Voted 3 - 2 (Roggeveen and Chadwick opposed) to form the new Harbor Plan Committee to implement the Harbors Plan with the committee composed of three members of the Shellfish and Harbor Advisory Committee and four people appointed by the selectmen.

Note: There will not be a selectmen's meeting tonight because it is the fifth Wednesday of the month. The next regular meeting will be June 6 at which time the board will appoint new members to committees and commissions.
