NOW THAT'S LOCK LOVE This past Saturday, seven-year-old Kayla Elizabeth Hudzik donated 11 inches of her hair for the Locks of Love organization. Kayla's mother, Jane Ziesing, said she had never seen a seven-year-old so excited about giving something to such a good cause. "She has been wanting to do this for a long time so we have been growing it out. We agreed that once her ballet recital was over she would get it cut," said Ziesing. Trisha Patterson of the Hair Concern donated her time by giving Kayla the haircut. "Probably the cutest thing Kayla said when we first discussed it was, 'I would love to meet the little boy or girl who gets my hair. It is such a nice feeling to give something,'" said Ziesing. Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure

NNS HIRES SEVEN NEW FACULTY MEMBERS The Nantucket New School (NNS) has hired seven new faculty members for the 2007-08 school year.

Veteran Nantucket Public School teacher James Sulzer has been hired to lead the school's newly formatted fifth-grade program. At the Nantucket Elementary School since 1986, Sulzer has taught writing (1986- 1994) and fourth-grade (1994- present). Sulzer will be the primary teacher for the NNS fifth-grade, teaching math, social studies and language arts. He will also work with the students and teachers in the upper grades in the language arts realm.

Also joining the NNS's upper school is Matt Liddle. After eighteen years as a math and science teacher at Nantucket High School and Cyrus Peirce Middle School, Liddle will teach math and science to the sixth-, seventh-, and eighthgrade NNS students next fall.

NNS will also fully launch its expanded pre-school program in 2007-08. Over the last two years, NNS has been updating its current pre-kindergarten program by offering increased choices and flexibility to parents looking for pre-school options.

Joining the faculty as primary teachers for the School's three-year old students are Kerry DeCesare and Emily Thomas. DeCesare has an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts and Teacher Preparation from the New Hampshire Community Technical College, with a concentration in early-childhood education. She has been teaching at Small Friends on Nantucket since 2006 and is a teacher at the Strong Wings Adventure School. Thomas has a B.A. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Akron, Ohio with a focus on early-childhood development, literacy and instructional methods. Formerly an assistant teacher at Wee Whalers in Nantucket, Allison Johnson will join the three-year-old team of teachers as a teaching assistant.

Melanie Hajjar has been hired to be the lead teacher for the four-year-old preschool program. Currently the NNS lower-school science teacher and assistant teacher in the first-grade, Hajjar is also the owner of Cosmic Creations, offering arts and science-based programming for after-school, camps and children's birthday parties on Nantucket. She is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a degree in Art, Science and Elementary Education.

Lisa Solomon is also joining the School's lower-school faculty as the second grade teacher. Solomon has worked as a substitute teacher in the Nantucket Elementary School since 2005. Prior to moving to Nantucket, Solomon worked as a teacher in Boston, Martha's Vineyard and Woods Hole. She has a Master's Degree from the Steinhardt School of Education in New York and a B.A. in Studio Art and Art and Art Professions from Hunter College.
