"Gourmet Shops of New York"

by Susan Meisel and Natalie

Sann Rizzoli Curling up with 'Gourmet Shops of New York' is just like taking a walking tour of New York City and the five boroughs without ever leaving your sofa. While sitting at home, you'll get to visually sample neighborhood delicacies, culinary secrets and untold stories from behind the counters of the city's hidden-away and best-loved specialty markets, from the East Village to Arthur Avenue. For those readers who devour cookbooks with the same gusto as a great novel, "Gourmet Shops" will inspire you to re-create the molten Aztec-chocolate cake from Mariebelle New York or the mozzarella en carozza from Russo's on 11th Street. Bon appetit!

"The Pesthouse"

"The Pesthouse" by Jim Crace
by Jim Crace This book is a wonderfully crafted allegory of an indefinite time in the future when America as we know it, once the safest place on Earth, has crumbled and become a legend. Industry has been lost, written language has been forgotten and those who remain are childlike in that they have no knowledge of how they came to fight for their survival. The book follows the journey of two travelers, across fallow fields and 'junkles,' to the East Coast in order to head to Europe, where they hope to start life again, a reverse migration of sorts. Crace masterfully paints a world of struggle with the possibility of new beginnings, while also making us examine the consequences of America's constant need for expansion without thought to the future.

"Venus" (Rated R for language, some sexual

content and brief nudity.) "Venus" is a touching tale of a relationship unlike any we have seen before between an aging actor and a 20-something girl. Maurice (Peter O'Toole in his Oscar-nominated role) becomes enamored with Jessie (newcomer Jodi Whitaker), who is the self-centered and sharptongued grandniece of a fellow friend. He quickly dubs her "Venus," and the film follows this unlikely pair all while Maurice yearns for Jessie's youth and beauty, both of which he once had. "Venus," in the end, is a film that touches on what should matter most in life: love, friendship and the beauty of connection. Directed by Roger Michell. Also starring Jodi Whitaker and Vanessa Redgrave.

"Back to Black" by Amy Winehouse This CD just won Britain's Mojo awards for best new solo performer and best new song [rehab]. Check her out; she rocks - she could very easily become the Grammy's best new performer.

*I'm in the mood for a Podcast - maybe a dozen new songs I've had on repeat lately, plus a few sound bites from interviews I conducted for this section. Look for it on YackOn.com.
