ARTISTS' ASSOCIATION OF NANTUCKET GALLERY
19 Washington St. In 1930, the Artists' Association of Nantucket was 15 years away from existing. Artist Maud Stumm, sensing a lost opportunity for fraternization and commerce, encouraged over 50 artists to display their art outside the Atheneum. So began the Sidewalk Arts Show, which the AAN took over in 1960. In its history, the show featured artists like Robert Perrin and Colonel Julian Yates. Of Yates, George Thomas remembered, "People lined up waiting for him to arrive with his canvases which were usually wet. They were snatched up immediately…"
The AAN (temporarily) discontinued the show in 1980, but that hiatus ended last year. The Sidewalk Arts Show returns this Saturday with almost two dozen participating artists (as of press time). The show takes place on Washington Street, between the AAN's Joyce and Seward Johnson Gallery and Great Point Properties' office. It's a nice opportunity for art patrons to meet with the people who continue in the tradition of the first Nantucket Arts Colony.
