Junior varsity baseball, softball on solid footing At 6-3-1 through Monday, the JV softballers are on a roll of late, earning a doubleheader victory over Southeastern last Thursday and turning back Sacred Heart last Tuesday, and again Monday at home. The 20-4 victory over Sacred Heart was eclipsed two days later with a first game, 34-4, demolition of Southeastern, followed by an 8-3 triumph in the nightcap. The girls then overcame the Saints, 19-2, in Monday's game. Coach Merrill Mason is understandably pleased with her team's efforts, citing a solid defense to complement an explosive offense. Morgan Dugan has been solid at catcher, as demonstrated by her throw to thwart a steal attempt and a subsequent block of home plate and putout against Sacred Heart. Pitchers Shelby Campbell and Katie Godleski, meanwhile, can be counted on for reliable mound support and tosses that consistently find the strike zone. On offense, Ashley Clinger homered against Sacred Heart, while Mayla Davis hitting prowess finds her consistently on base. Taylor Murphy also has been coming into her own at the plate of late. On the boys' side, coach Dennis Caron cites last Thursday's dominating 14-3 win over Sturgis as an indication of the team's putting it together as the season winds down. The team sported a 2-2 record through last week. Against Sturgis, Jamie Viera struck out 11 and gave up just one hit in a five inning performance. Chris Welch contributed with three hits and three runs scored, while Will Soverino scored four runs and stroked two doubles. In the season's other win, an early-season, 7-4, victory over Mashpee, Viera was again the winning pitcher, striking out eight and allowing just three hits. Other bright spots on the team include freshman infielder Alesandro Cuello, freshman catcher Eddie Moreau (who had two hits against Sturgis), sophomore first baseman Matt Fry, freshman second baseman Cameron Kobb and freshman outfielder Josh Sibley-Liddle. Injuries have taken their toll, including a broken arm suffered by James Rhodes as a result of a skateboarding mishap. Despite the setbacks, coach Caron says his team plays with enthusiasm and exhibits great potential. "I think the varsity will be well-served in a couple of years," he pointed out. The boys look to improve upon their record when they travel to Holbrook tomorrow. I |
