They walked 26 miles on Saturday and 13 miles on Sunday in memory of their close friend Kelly West, who at the age of 35 lost her courageous battle with the deadly disease last April. West left behind her three beautiful children, her beloved husband, her devoted parents and many other friends and family. There were 19 walkers from Nantucket participating in this walk. Each raised the required goal of $1,800, and then some, per person and a team goal of $50,000. (at press time they were at over $38,000 with more being added) For information regarding the event, please visit www.avonwalk.org. The Nantucket team was among the 10 top fundraisers at the event. HULL RECEIVES YOUTH AWARD Olivia Hull was honored as a recipient of the Pope St. Pius X Youth Award at St. Mary's Cathedral in Fall River last night.
Hull was one of 49 teens from parishes throughout the Fall River Diocese to be selected for the award that is named for the pontiff who created the Fall River Diocese in 1904. She was nominated by St. Mary's Our Lady of the Isle pastor, the Rev. Paul A. Caron, for her extensive work and dedication to the parish. "I'm honored to be able to have nominated her," Father Caron said. "It's a very special award."
The last to receive the honor from Nantucket was Craig Davis in 2003.
Those nominated are recognized for their selflessness and for serving their parishes in a number of ways, including as assistant catechists and youth council members. Among her volunteer efforts, Hull has been training new altar servers for the past three years. Hull is a junior at Nantucket High School and is the daughter of Diana and George Hull.
