Baseball team evens out at 4-4
With back-to-back victories over New England Christian Academy and Provincetown, the Whalers' baseball team took its 4-3 record to Mashpee Sunday, only to see its winning streak snapped in a tight contest won by Mashpee, 3-2.

"Overall, it was a fantastic game and a fantastic performance by our kids who kept battling back," coach Art Crowley said Monday.

Tomas Smaliorius struck out six6 and allowed only three hits, while the Whalers had four hits but couldn't make up the difference in runs. "We'd threaten every inning, but just couldn't bring them in," Crowley noted.

Nantucket scored both its runs in the top of the seventh after Smaliorius and Ethan Bell walked. A fake bunt and double steal put them on second and third for Jamie Viera, who scored both on a ground ball hit up the middle.

Will Soverino had a fine day at the plate, going 2 for 3. Against New England Christian, Eric Lowell pitched a strong game, striking out 12 batters in a two-hit performance to pace the 9-2 win.

At Provincetown last Thursday, Nantucket trailed, 3-0, before coming back in the seventh inning to prevail in the end, 6-3.

The team is scheduled to play Friday at Blue Hills, with a home doubleheader Saturday against New Testament Christian School.

"We're getting better with each

performance," Crowley says. I
